The Nutritional Relationships of Chromium

In 1959 a physiological role for chromium was determined. It is known that chromium is a constituent of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF) and is synergistic with insulin in promoting the cellular glucose uptake. Chromium deficiency produces an increase in the requirement for insulin. Chromium facilitates insulin at intracellular sites including the ribosomes, and is known to stimulate some enzymes in vitro. Chromium is important for the structure and metabolism of nucleic acids.
